The Citizen Dame 5 is back! And to kick off the return of the 5, this week, let’s take a look at 5 great 2022 releases that you can stream at home this weekend for Halloween. These are all a perfect way to wrap up Spooky Movie Season.
Barbarian (dir. Zach Cregger)
Watch it on HBO Max
It’s pouring down rain late at night when you pull up to your AirBnB in an unfamiliar neighborhood. To make matters worse, someone is already inside, claiming they also rented the house for the night. We all assume we would hightail it out of there and never set foot inside the place. But director Zach Cregger does a great job of setting up a scenario where, even as characters make terrible choices, we completely understand why and can’t honestly say we wouldn’t make the same mistakes. Barbarian is creepy and disturbing and has a great cast with Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long.
Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities (various directors)
Watch it on Netflix
Guillermo del Toro set the internet ablaze with the announcement of his new anthology series, Cabinet of Curiosities. In this four-night event on Netflix, eight directors including Ana Lily Amirpour, Jennifer Kent, and Catherine Hardwicke bring to life a host of hour-long horror movies. With star-studded casts, each episode delves into the creepy minds of Lovecraft, del Toro, and more to bring tales of demons and witches and graveyard delights. It is so much fun and a perfect new addition to your Halloween traditions.
Orphan: First Kill (dir. William Brent Bell)
Watch it on Paramount+
We’ve talked about it here on Citizen Dame a few times, but Isabelle Fuhrman’s Esther is so gleefully devious in the prequel to Orphan, Orphan: First Kill. Set just before the events of the first movie, we get to know Esther and how she got started committing murder and mayhem in the first place. The twists and turns are plentiful and Julia Stiles is a fantastic foil to our wicked, villainous protagonist. It’s a silly movie and just a lot of good fun.
Sissy (dir. Hannah Barlow, Kane Senes)
Watch it on AMC+/Shudder
It’s very tempting to exact revenge on your childhood bullies when you have the chance. And even though Cecilia (Aisha Dee) has managed to make a name for herself as a popular social media influencer, the memories of past trauma surface with a vengeance when she is invited to her former BFF’s bachelorette weekend. Finding herself face-to-face with the girl who stole her best friend reopens an old wound for Sissy and the ensuing chaos is wild.
X (dir. Ti West)
Watch it on Showtime
You’ve already heard so much about Ti West and Mia Goth’s one-two punch of X and Pearl. You can enjoy them in any order, but if you haven’t seen either one yet, do yourself a favor and start with X. Mia Goth is joined by another new Scream Queen, Jenna Ortega, plus Brittany Snow and Kid Cudi for a slasher movie you cannot miss. The film has a fantastic 70s vibe and perfectly blends two of the great sins: sex and murder.
